Kildare LGFA Senior Championship Suncroft v St Laurences

Kildare LGFA Senior Championship

Suncroft v St Laurences

Date: Saturday 10th August

Venue: Suncroft

Although they are neighbouring clubs these two teams have not met for many years in either a competition so there is no form to go on and both teams are struggling a bit in the Championship. There has been more than a month since the last championship game and with holidays and injuries both teams are tight on numbers. Suncroft have 15 for the game and St Laurences have 14 so it will be a 14 a side start.

A bright evening Suncroft with only a slight breeze which will be little advantage to either team.

The game got going at 19:37 and it took a full six minutes before Eve Kehoe got the opening score of the game for Suncroft. Both teams looked rusty and off the pace. Two minutes later Rebecca Coogan got Suncrofts second which was followed by another Eve Kehoe point from distance. Ciara Fennelly then went on a blistering run from the backs and pointed. Two minutes later Aislinn Dooley pointed to make it Suncroft 0:05(5), St Laurences 0:00(0) at fifteen minutes, half way through the first half. The scoreline looked good for Suncroft but St Laurences had had a good number of attacks and wides and it was only a matter of time before they got off the mark. St Laurences got a goal from play which was quickly followed by a point from a free. St Laurence’s then got a penalty which was powered wide of the post, 30 seconds later they got another penalty and this time made no mistake. Twenty three minutes in Suncroft 0:05(5), St Laurences 2:01(7). Over the remaining of the half it was all St Laurences but good defending by Suncroft limited them to only one point. Half time St Laurences 2:02(8), Suncroft 0:05(5).

As per the first half the first five minutes of the second half was stale mate and only broken when Aislinn Connelly fisted over a point for Suncroft. St Laurences took control and put over another six unanswered points over the next twenty minutes. Trina Duggan finished the scoring with a point in the twenty-eight minute and the game finished up St Laurences 2:08(14), Suncroft 0:07(7).

While Suncroft were missing some key players they didn’t perform either as a team or as individuals. It had a veneer of ok for a while as they kicked over some early points but when St Laurences got a grip on the game, uncharacteristically and disappointingly, Suncroft just didn’t rise to the challenge. The player on the ball was left unsupported, no one running off the shoulder, no one running into space.
