U17 League Champions

U17 League Division 3 Final

Sunday 29 July 2018

St. Conleths, Newbridge

Suncroft 2:13 (19)

Athgarvan 2:08 (14)

Suncroft had met Athgarvan in the first round of the league and on that occasion Athgarvan won by 11 points (4:15 to 3:07). Suncroft had improved during the following games and were reasonably confident that they would put in a much better performance this time around.

Athgarvan started strong and had three points on the scoreboard and had a rasper of a shot come off the crossbar before Suncroft got their house in order and got off the mark with a point. Suncroft backs locked it down and with some excellent play from goalkeeper Tadgh Delaney kept Athgarvan scoreless for the rest of the first half. Suncroft had converted a number of points and a Tom Martin goal had them fairly comfortable at half time.

Athgarvan came out strong again in the second half and for ten minutes threw everything at the Croft. Suncroft managed the storm and in the period despite being under savage pressure only conceded three points and managed to score two. Through the middle of the second half Suncroft were on top again and widened the gap a bit but again for the last ten minutes Athgarvan were dominating all over the field but with solid defending and a man of the match performance by goalkeeper Tadgh Delaney the Athgarvan dominance was not reflecting on the scoreboard. Athgarvan were closing the gap bit by bit in the last minutes but a Killian Hanley goal for Suncroft put the game beyond doubt.
