Sunceroft v Milltown
For one very hot Saturday in June, the Junior Cert preparations were put aside as Suncroft met Milltown in this Division 5 decider.
Suncroft got off to a quick start scoring three unanswered points. Milltown fought back and scored a goal and a point which Suncroft matched making the teams level. Both teams worked hard to try and add to the score but both sets of backs defended bravely. Half way through the first half Ciara Fennelly took a long run up the field getting away from her marker to take a long shot in which just dropped over the goalkeeper's head and landed in the back of the net. This gave Suncroft a boost, they all worked hard to create plays which culminated in a goal and a point from Taylor Hughes followed by a point from Vice Captain Aine Troy. This left half time score at 2-6 to 1-1 in favour of Suncroft.
The hard work of the first half and the heat took it's toll, but, Milltown came back fighting and scored 2-2. It might have been more but for some terrific defending from Captain Caoimhe Doyle and Mary Enright and a very young Suncroft team. Late in the half Suncroft were awarded a penalty which Ella Moylan scored. Both teams battled on to score another point each, leaving the final score 3-7 to 3-4.
There were 27 girls on this panel who helped all through the season as Suncroft struggled to field a team on occasion because of multiple team and sport commitments, and rescheduled games.
Milltown fought hard to make this a great game, with standout performances from Grace Murtagh, Ciara and Aoife Buckley, Nicole McCullagh and Claire Sweeney(Capt).
