Suncroft Ladies traveled a short journey to St Laurence's to contest a Division 4 league final against Athy. These two teams met early in the league and they gave their supporters exactly what they wanted to see, a fantastic game of football.
Today both teams were up for it and they did not disappoint their supporters. From Referee Billy O' Connell's throw in, Suncroft got off to a flying start with a point from Trina Duggan. Athys Kate Purcell opened the scoreboard for Athy. The Croft had Athy under pressure and Ellen Dowlings goal in the first half help to keep the game in the balance. The first half threw out some great moves and scores the half time score was 0-7 to 1-03 with Athy leading by a point.
The second half started brightly for Suncroft with a quick goal from Trina Duggan. Nicole Dooley quickly followed up with another goal and this rocked Athy for a little while. But Athy failed to lie down with Donna Berry, Kate Purcell, Jodie Black and Niamh Walsh causing most trouble for Suncroft and Athy managed to point some great scores. On the Croft sise Anna O' Modhrain, Carla Ennis, Sophie Hobbs and Becky Johnson caused a lot of problems for Athy.
Athy introduced Niamh Mulhall in the second half who probably came closest to spoiling the party for the Croft ladies but the Crofts experienced Paula Browne was introduced and this experience left Athy struggling at times. Athy had two chances on goal but Suncrofts keeper, and Captain, Becky McGuirk pulled off some excellent saves to keep a clean sheet.
Overall this was an excellent display of football from two well matched sides. Superb play from Suncrofts backs, Muireann Fagan, Niamh Bolger, Chloe Reid, Jenna Brannock and Becky Banim. The Crofts corner forward, Roisin Bolger, made some excellent runs and was constantly putting on the pressure and this was supported by Abbie Lea Poole and Stephanie Hayes who worked tirelessly throughout the game.
